Catalans, who live outside Catalonia, with the rest of Spanish compatriots, are aware of the tactics used by the Catalan nationalists whose ultimate goal is to break-away from the rest of Spain. For this, we want to educate you about how this is affecting your fellow citizen’s feelings; you are forcing us to become foreigners in our own land.
We speak up against the selective nationalism which encourages division and discrimination that rejects the idea of an open and integrated society, where there is room for Catalonia, Spain, Europe and the whole human family.
Catalonia with the rest of Spain is part of one social and historic reality. It would be wrong to state now that our ancestors, grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters or children, lived, live or will live on the other side of a border.
We understand that the Catalan language is part of our culture. As a language it should be used as a way of communication among citizens; not as a tool to separate, or to foster division among our peoples.
It is a falsity, spread by the nationalists, to say that Spain is stealing from Catalonia or that Spain looks down on Catalans. From our own experience, we can tell that we have felt welcomed wherever we were in Spain: in Manresa, Cartagena, Badajoz or Barcelona…
We need to educate you against the loss of freedom in Catalonia, where the official nationalist line of thinking, seems to be the only valid one to represent the whole of Catalan society. The takeover of this way of thinking in the Media, as well as in the local and regional public Institutions, is against the basic principles of democracy where neutrality and plurality of thinking should be guaranteed, leaving those who do not accept that mindset by the wayside.
Europe should be aware of this real nationalistic threat, based on a false victimization which brought so much suffering to the whole continent in recent history.
Catalonia is an essential part of Spain, which is the main reason why we believe that this nationalism is challenging each one of us, a Spain without Catalonia would not be Spain.
For this, we are committed to support those Catalans who have the courage to choose the path of defending what keeps us together rather than what divides us. We call on all Spaniards, whether Catalans or not, who want to defend the idea of living together in diversity, to fight for a Spain for all.
